Westeros is ready to conquer the big screen.
Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is set for theatrical release on June 1, 2029. Owen Harris directs the film that has a script from Beau Willimon and marks the first feature film for the franchise that adapts author George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series.
The studio confirmed the title at CinemaCon earlier this year for the movie that centers on King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. Castmembers have not yet been revealed.
A Game of Thrones movie has been discussed for more than a decade, with talk dating back to 2013, two years after the series adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire first premiered on HBO. Back then, Game of Thrones series co-creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss pitched network brass on the wildly popular series potentially ending with three feature films. The flagship series aired its finale in May 2019.
HBO has two current Game of Thrones series, with House of the Dragon having aired its third season over the summer, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two is expected next year.
More to come.
